Babul Supriyo Singer Biography, Interview & Pictures

Babul from a very prestigious musical family in West Bengal, grandson of noted composer Banikantha N. C. Baral, Babul inherited prolific musical talent. Born 15th December 1970, he was extensively trained by his grandfather since early childhood. He won several inter-school musical accolades while in Don Bosco. He was “All India Don Bosco Music Champion” in 1983 and awarded “The most enriching talent” title in 1985 as well. While in college, in Calcutta, he won almost 45 inter-college music competitions in different categories and was also a regular performer of AIR and Doordarshan since childhood. On completion of his Honours graduation in Commerce in 1991 from the Calcutta University, he got a coveted job in Standard Chartered Bank in Calcutta. However he always cherished the dream of becoming a “playback singer” and inspite of a lot of opposition, he bravely left his job and migrated to Bombay in November 1992. During the mid-nineties, he slowly but very steadily started making his presence felt in Bollywood by delivering back to back hits like ‘aati hai to chal’(saath rang ke sapne), ‘aaj meri zindegi mein’ (Khiladiyon ka khiladi), O piya piya (Agnisakshi),“Hata sawan ki ghata” (Hello Brother) etc. However, he hit big time with “Dil ne dil ko pukara” (Kaho Na Pyar Hai), where he lends his voice for the “Heartthrob of the nation” Hrithik Roshan. Thereafter, there has been no looking back for him. He soon became a regular in the highly competitive arena of playback singing and delivered hits like His title song Sanson Ko Sanson Mein from national award wining film Hum Tum, apart from topping the charts everywhere, has won him a lot of critical acclamations along with major award nominations. He has consistently delivered several hits as a playback singer in popular Bollywood movies like Fanaa, Vivaah, Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya, Pari Pari (Hungama), Chori Chori Chupke Chupke, Maine koyi Jaadu Nehi Kiya (Mujhe Kuchh Kehna Hai), Dhai Aksar Prem Ke (all songs for the Abhishek-Aishwarya Starrer), Aate Aate (Chori Chori), Tera Jaadu Chal Gaya (Title Song), Dekha Jo Tujhe Yaar Dil Me Baji Guitar (Apna Sapna Money Money) etc. to name a few.

Babul’s venture into the world of foreign tours and concerts started with a bang, when in May 1993 he toured USA and Canada with none other than the “Big B” himself. Thereafter in 1994 and 1995 his regular tours with virtually all-prominent film stars gained him recognition amongst the International audience. In July 1997 and April 1999, he accompanied the legendary “Asha Bhonsle” to her concerts in USA and since then has performed with her in prestigious concerts all over. After many successful tours abroad, Babul has become extremely popular in the centers like the USA, UK, Holland and South America, where he regularly features in musical Concerts. In July 2002 he was honoured with a “Honorary Citizenship by the State Council of Atlanta”, United States of America; he being one of the youngest ever performer to receive such a recognition. He was very well received by the audience in his first non-film album, titled “Khoya Khoya Chand” with Alka Yagnik. His solo debut album “Sochta Hun” released in March from Universal, which was launched by none other than Amitabh Bachchan was very successful and is honoured by M T.V. IMMIES Award. He is immensely popular in his hometown Calcutta both as the host for Zee T.V.’s popular musical programme Sa Re Ga Ma as well as the singer for many super hit Bengali films and modern songs. He has also been a HOST in Sony Entertainment Television’s prime time musical reality show K For Kishore where he shared the stage with none other than Asha Bhonsle who was one of the judges in the show. The show is extremely popular in countries like USA, UAE too where it is being aired presently . He has won all the major awards in Bengal including the coveted Bengal Film Journalists Award, Anandlok Award, Star Jolsha Award, Etv Award, and the Zee TV Awards several times for Playback in Films, Non-film songs and Anchoring on TV. His second pop album titled “Kuch Aisa Laghta Hai” was released from Universal Music in September 2005 by legendary ghazal singer Shri. Jagjit Singh. The title song of the album was shot in Santorini Island in Greece. The video features Babul and the then reigning Femina Miss Asia Pacific Niharika Singh. The album won him two MTV nominations this year both in the Best Pop Singer and Best Pop Album categories. He has also probably sung the largest number of remixes which ranges from the immensely popular “Q-Funk” in 1995 to the very recent Pardesia, Disco 82 and Waada Karo. His maiden Rabindrasangeet album Kotobaaro Bhebechhinu, dedicated to his mentor & grandfather Banikantha N.C.Baral and released from Asha Audio last year, has met unprecedented success and is on the charts for a record 50 weeks in a row. Also, his song Pherari Monn from the national award winning film Antaheen was No.1 on the charts for more than 20 weeks. Babul is a multi-faceted personality and being prolific in English and Bengali, his mother tongue, he regularly writes articles on current affairs and sports in popular newpapers and magazines like Times of India, Hindustan Times, Anandobazar Patrika etc. Interestingly, he also enjoyed success as an actor when he played the male lead in Legendary Bengali Filmaker Tarun Mazumder’s super-hit Bengali Film Chander Bari last year. His forthcoming film is Ogo Bodhu Shundori, which is a interesting take on of Uttam Kumar's last film where he has played the lead role apart from singing all the songs, sung by Kishore Kumar in the original film.

With a not-so-long struggle behind him, Babul who many believe is a multi-talented guy, has managed to carve a niche for himself in this highly competitive field of playback singing by virtue of his honest hard work and a sweet voice, which is a rich blend of rich melody and emotions. 2010 Diwana (playback singer)
